Elizabeth Nyuma and her daughters, Oretha and Mabel, own and operate Afri Harvest Farm. Originally from Lofa Kante, Liberia, Elizabeth’s parents were killed during the Second Liberian Civil War (1999 – 2003). Afterwards, she fled with her children to a refugee camp in neighboring Sierra Leone. After five years in the camp, their family permanently resettled in Houston.

Elizabeth speaks English and Kissi fluently. While Elizabeth wasn’t lucky enough to complete her schooling, as a teenager she dove straight into business and farming. Growing– for subsistence and her livelihood – has been a lifelong occupation for Elizabeth. Because of her skill as a farmer, she sustained her family in the refugee camp. Today she continues to support her family, and nourishes the broader Houston community, through her growing acumen. 

Elizabeth prides herself on her self-sufficiency. As a farmer, she doesn’t want nor need to buy food from another person. She loves the warm Houston weather and the feeling of security she and her family have found here.
